UP Police Regs 203Chapter 17 · Patrolling and Blockade
Section 203 · Paragraph 194. Six-round patrolling system
Text size — level 1 of 4
Town patrols should be conducted using the "rotation system," the essential features of which are that each constable should have rest for two nights out of six, at least one constable should be on duty during the day and two at night (from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), and no constable should work for more than four hours at a time during the night.
Note: (1) Constables on night patrol duty should be constantly on the move, paying particular attention to areas prone to break-ins. Half of the constables on daytime duty should remain present at the police station or outpost. All constables who have retired from duty should be present at night.
(2) Where the force is sufficiently large, the patrols should be organized into divisions, each division under the charge of a sub-inspector or head constable. If watchmen are employed for surveillance and patrolling, the duty of supervision should be performed by a constable. This officer should accompany a special patrol team to monitor the proper functioning of the patrolling officers and to detect thieves. This special team may sometimes wear plain clothes for convenience. Constables deployed on patrolling and special night patrols in the town should be provided with spears and sticks.
(3) Constables on patrol should be responsible for keeping a vigil at night for registered criminals.
