UP Police Regs 166Chapter 13 · Arrest, Bail and Custody
Section 166 · Paragraph 158. Determination of the number of prisoners in the lock-up by the police officer
Text size — level 1 of 4
The Superintendent of Police will determine the number of prisoners (male and female) that can be held simultaneously in each police station lock-up. This number will be marked on the outside and in a readily visible part of the lock-up. The calculation will be based on thirty-six square feet of floor space and a total of 540 cubic feet of space per person.
Prisoners should not be held in a lock-up beyond its specified capacity. When the number of persons arrested in a police station exceeds the capacity of the lock-up, the excess should be housed either in a neighboring jail or, if possible, in a safe and suitable house in the neighborhood, which can be rented temporarily if necessary. If such accommodation is not available, they should be sent to the nearest lock-up where space is available. For each police station, the Superintendent of Police will determine where those in excess of the number of persons capable of being held in the lock-up should be housed or sent. He will also pass orders for the guarding of prisoners in places other than the lock-up.
