UP Police Regs 19Chapter 1 · Senior Officers
Section 19 · Paragraph 16. Crime Register
Text size — level 1 of 4
All cognizable crimes reported at the police station should be entered in the English Crime Register. A separate section of this register will be assigned to each police station, and the six classes of crimes specified in Section A, to be attached to the annual inspection report, will be included within that section. If a particular crime, for example, cattle theft, is widespread, the Superintendent may assign separate pages within the class of cases to which it relates.
The Superintendent may direct his reader to fill in the first eight columns of the register, but the column for accusations must be filled in by himself. He may, however, direct an Assistant or Deputy Superintendent in charge of a subdivision to maintain the portion of the register pertaining to that subdivision; in which case, such officer shall fill in all the columns by hand. Entries in all columns should be made in a timely manner, as case diaries and important papers are received. When a trial, and where there is no trial, the investigation into any case of importance, is concluded, the Superintendent, after reviewing the facts, should decide whether the conduct of the police has been culpable in any way, whether it is biased or otherwise, and should make a suitable final entry in the charge sheet. He should enter in this column, in red ink, the names of all persons suspected in the case, if, in his opinion, the suspicion is reasonable.
